El Nino vs La Nina: What They Are and How They Change the Weather
The two opposite phases of the tropical Pacific's ENSO pattern, what they tend to do to global weather, and why they are seasonal odds and not daily forecasts.
If you follow weather news for more than a season or two, you will hear the names El Nino and La Nina again and again. They are not storms, and they are not forecasts for any single day. They are two opposite phases of a slow ocean and atmosphere pattern in the tropical Pacific that nudges the odds of wet or dry, warm or cool, across large parts of the world. Understanding them helps you read seasonal outlooks without mistaking a tendency for a promise.
What is ENSO?
ENSO stands for the El Nino Southern Oscillation. It describes a linked seesaw between ocean temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific and the atmospheric pressure and wind patterns above them. When the ocean warms or cools in that region, the atmosphere responds, and those changes ripple outward through the jet streams that steer weather systems around the globe. ENSO has three phases: El Nino, La Nina, and neutral. It typically shifts on a timescale of months to a couple of years, which is why it shapes seasons rather than single days.
El Nino: the warm phase
El Nino is the phase where the central and eastern tropical Pacific runs unusually warm. That warmth changes where the biggest tropical thunderstorms cluster, which in turn tugs on the jet stream. In broad and honest terms, El Nino winters tend to lean:
- Wetter across the southern United States, from California to the Gulf Coast and Florida.
- Milder across the northern United States and southern Canada.
- Toward a quieter Atlantic hurricane season, because stronger upper level winds tend to shear storms apart.
- Toward drought risk in parts of eastern and northern Australia and Southeast Asia.
None of these is guaranteed in a given year. They are the directions the dice are weighted, not the number that comes up.
La Nina: the cool phase
La Nina is roughly the mirror image. The same central and eastern Pacific runs unusually cool, and the global tilts tend to reverse:
- Drier across much of the southern United States.
- Wetter and often cooler across the Pacific Northwest and the northern tier.
- Toward a more active Atlantic hurricane season, since weaker shear lets storms organize.
- Wetter conditions across northern and eastern Australia and parts of Southeast Asia.
Again, these are seasonal leanings. A La Nina year can still deliver a quiet hurricane stretch or a dry spell in Australia. The pattern loads the odds; it does not write the script.
The neutral phase
Between the two extremes sits ENSO neutral, when Pacific temperatures are near their long term average. Neutral does not mean quiet or featureless weather. It simply means the ENSO signal is weak, so other drivers, from regional pressure patterns to random chance, carry more of the weight in any seasonal outlook.
Tendencies, not daily forecasts
This is the point that gets lost most often. El Nino and La Nina shift probabilities over a whole season across large regions. They do not tell you whether it will rain on your street next Tuesday.
An El Nino or La Nina outlook is a statement about the odds over months, not a forecast for any single day or town. For that, you still need the actual model forecasts.

How forecasters monitor ENSO
You do not have to guess at the current phase, and you should not. Several official agencies track it continuously and publish plain language updates:
