How to read a snow storm forecast before it busts

Snow is the forecast that fails most often, and the failure is usually one of three things. Here is how to read totals, timing and the rain-snow line so the number on your screen means something.

Nearly 400,000 US searches a month ask some version of "snow storm weather forecast", and most of them end in disappointment, because snow is the hardest forecast in meteorology. A one-degree temperature error, which is routine, can turn 8 inches into cold rain. A 50-mile shift in storm track, also routine two days out, moves the heavy band from your suburb to the next county. This is how to read the forecast so it fails you less.

1. The total is a ratio, not a measurement

Models forecast liquid water. Snow depth is that water multiplied by a snow ratio. The textbook figure is 10 to 1: an inch of liquid makes 10 inches of snow. Real storms run from about 6 to 1 in wet snow near freezing to 20 to 1 or more in cold, dry air, and the ratio changes during the storm as temperatures fall. That is why a forecast of one inch of liquid becomes "6 to 12 inches" of snow rather than a single number, and why the totals in a cold storm keep being revised upward.

2. The rain-snow line moves more than the storm

For most of the eastern half of the country, the question is not how much precipitation falls but what form it takes. The dividing line depends on temperature through the whole lowest mile of the atmosphere, not just at the surface. A warm layer a few thousand feet up turns snow to sleet or freezing rain even while the thermometer outside reads 30 degrees. Forecasters watch the 850 millibar temperature, roughly 5,000 feet up, and the position of that line can shift 50 to 100 miles between model runs. If your city sits within that band, the forecast is genuinely uncertain and the honest answer is a range.

3. Timing drift decides your commute

A storm that starts at 3 AM and ends at noon is a snow day. The same storm starting at 6 AM is a disaster on the roads. Onset time is where the forecast models disagree most, and the disagreement rarely closes until the storm is 12 hours away. The practical move is to compare them rather than pick one. On our city pages, Boston or Minneapolis for instance, the NWS blend, the American GFS and the European model sit side by side hour by hour and the hours where they split are flagged. 4. Read the probabilistic numbers, not just the headline

The NWS publishes three snow numbers for every storm: the expected total, a low-end amount you can plan on with about 90 percent confidence, and a high-end potential with about 10 percent. If the expected total is 8 inches with a range of 4 to 14, the storm is uncertain; if it is 8 with a range of 6 to 10, it is locked in. The NWS also grades storms with the Winter Storm Severity Index, from Limited through Minor, Moderate and Major to Extreme, which folds in ice, wind and ground temperature and is a better guide to disruption than inches alone.

5. Watch for the dry slot and the band

Big Eastern storms have structure. A dry slot of sinking air wraps into the storm and can shut off snow for hours in one place while it pours 2 inches an hour 40 miles away in a mesoscale band. Neither shows up in a daily total. When a forecast mentions banding, expect a lottery: some towns will double the forecast and others will halve it. The radar is the only tool that shows where the band actually sets up.

6. Match the number to the alert

The forecast total is what drives the NWS products: roughly 2 to 5 inches brings a Winter Weather Advisory, 6 or more in 12 hours a Winter Storm Warning, and wind rather than snow decides a blizzard. A checklist for the day before

  • Note the liquid amount, not just the snow total. Half an inch of liquid is a real storm whatever the ratio.
  • Find out which side of the rain-snow line the models put you on, and whether they agree.
  • Compare onset hours across models; plan around the earliest.
  • Look for the low-end total. That is the amount to plan on.

Common questions

Why are snow forecasts so often wrong?
Because snow depends on three things that are each hard to forecast: the temperature profile that sets rain versus snow, the snow ratio that turns liquid into depth, and the exact storm track that places the heavy band. Small errors in any of them change the total by a factor of two.
What is a snow ratio?
The number of inches of snow produced by one inch of liquid water. The standard assumption is 10 to 1, but wet snow near freezing can be 6 to 1 and cold powder 20 to 1 or more.
How far out is a snow forecast reliable?
Whether a storm will happen is usually clear four to five days out. Amounts and the rain-snow line firm up within about two days, and onset timing often only within 12 hours. Treat any total more than two days out as a possibility, not a plan.
What is the Winter Storm Severity Index?
An NWS scale from Limited to Extreme that rates a storm's expected disruption, combining snow amount and rate, ice, wind, blowing snow and ground conditions. It is a better guide to impact than snow inches alone.
What does the rain-snow line depend on?
Temperature through the lowest mile of the atmosphere, not only at the surface. A warm layer aloft turns snow to sleet or freezing rain even when the ground temperature is below freezing.
