How do you measure which forecast is most accurate?
For each model we take its past forecast of the daily high temperature and compare it to ERA5, a reanalysis of what actually happened, over the last 30 days across 24 US cities. We then calculate the mean absolute error. Lower is better.
Is Apple Weather accurate?
Apple Weather does not run its own forecast: it blends other sources, including the US National Weather Service and ECMWF. So it is only as accurate as those underlying models, and it never shows you when they disagree. In our last-30-day test the NWS model that Apple leans on came third of three at about 2.1°F average error. Comparing the models directly, the way we do, is the honest way to judge accuracy.
Is AccuWeather or The Weather Channel more accurate?
